The Simple Gift of Encouragement

This follows on from my post the other day: Throwback to My Childhood Paintings.

I’m surprised how popular that post was. There were over 110 comments last time I checked. I appreciate all the kind words!

Some of you pointed out that I must have had encouraging parents. That’s true.

I had the passion and interest, but that would have meant nothing if it were not for my parents. They provided all the supplies I needed, let me create a mess in the house (I’m sure you can still find paint stains around the house), and gave me a pat on the back every now and then. They even carefully stored all my childhood paintings for some 20 years.

I also had a great teacher in my early high school years, Ms Moy.

I was one of the few students who took art seriously back then. For most others, it was merely a “bludge” subject.

Ms Moi made sure to fan the flames of my interest. It wasn’t much. She really just acknowledged that I cared. But for that, I’ll always be grateful.

These simple acts of kindness can be the best gift you can give a child. It doesn’t cost anything and can provide a lifetime of benefits.

I thanked my parents the other day for being so supportive. But I would also like to thank Ms Moy. You probably won’t see this or perhaps even remember me, but I appreciate your help!

Happy painting!
