Pro Hart

This month’s featured artist is Pro Hart.

I grew up with his work hanging around my parents’ home. They own an original and a few prints.

His work embodies the dry Australian outback. He wasn’t an academic painter, but his style is iconic. And he was one of the few artists who experienced commercial success during his lifetime, which is a remarkable feat in its own right.

My parents visited his gallery some 40 years ago. They tell the story of a large, shed-like gallery with corrugated iron walls. Pro Hart’s work filled the room, along with that of many other famous artists. My father remembers seeing a Picasso in particular, which must have cost a pretty penny.
