Student’s Comments:

What I like:

  • “Utah Tree” watercolor.
  • The curves of the tree.
  • Bold, non-traditional colors.

What could be improved:

  • The lower left-hand limb in shadow.
  • Rendition of the greenery.

Dan’s Comments:

What I like:

  • Interesting use of color, particularly with the yellow sky. Reminds me of the Fauvist artists.
  • The composition is tight, intimate, and different.
  • I like how you have used layering with the watercolors to create a sense of depth and vibration.

What could be improved:

  • The subject doesn’t read that well. I think that comes down to the branches shooting out to the side. They are too big, dark, and dominant. They overpower the main tree trunk.
  • The foreground is too light in value compared to the surroundings.
  • Your technique and use of color is solid. I think there’s room for improvement in the way you bring it all together and subject selection. This is something you can improve without needing to pick up a brush. Look for interesting subjects throughout your day-to-day life. Get inspiration from nature.

Thanks Tia!
