Student’s Comments:

What I like:

  • The colors. The composition. The oval canvas. The subject, “THE CHAPEL IN THE WOODS”, is our sweet little church. I want to give it to the church to make prints and note cards for a fundraiser.

What could be improved:

  • Detail accuracy. Is the foreground too large and without interest?

Dan’s Comments:

What I like:

  • I like the oval surface. It seems to play well against the rigid architecture. It’s also a good reminder that we don’t always need to paint on rectangular surfaces.
  • Good detailing and linework, particularly in the trees. It has an illustrative finish.
  • You did well with the drawing and perspective of the building. Architecture can be unforgiving in the sense mistakes tend to be noticeable. – Strong focal point. It works well with the painting’s name, The Chapel in the Woods.

What could be improved:

  • You could do more with the sky and foreground. Not so much in terms of detail, but perhaps some color variance, texture, and some harder edges. The challenge is doing this without compromising the focal point.
  • I would add some dark accents to the trees. This would provide more contrast for the light colors of the building. It would also add depth to the trees.
  • Be careful with blending. Some areas appear a bit too smooth and fuzzy.

Well done Linda!
