Student’s Comments:

What I like:

I like the “period” feeling . The original photograph was taken in 1900 and I hoped to capture the image as it might have been painted at the time.

What could be improved for next time:

I am not sure what I could improve, I just feel it lacks something

Dan’s Comments:

Hi Stephen!

What I like:

  • Interesting and challenging composition. Reminds me of Mary Cassatt’s work.
  • The small areas of positive (active) space balance nicely against the large areas of negative (quiet) space.
  • I like the contrast between warm (red) and cool (blue) colors. Particularly in relation to the strong accents on the two figures.

What could be improved for next time:

  • The drapery/clothing could be more compelling. Look at the work of John Singer Sargent and Diego Velázquez for inspiration. Focus on big, simple shapes, dark accents, and highlights.
  • For the skin tones, look at the beach paintings by Joaquín Sorolla. Take note of all the subtle colors he uses for the skins, particularly in the shadows.
  • Careful not to get caught up in the tiny details. Narrow down on the few essential details and focus on them.
