Student’s Comments:

What I like:

  • I like the light and depth.

What could be improved for next time:

  • I find it difficult to get the colors and shapes of tree trunks. Those grays are difficult to get right. I thought a mixture of blues with their complement added but it was too warm and then adding more blue didn’t seem to get what I needed.

Dan’s Comments:

What I like:

  • Good use of value. Strong lights and strong darks. The relatively dark foreground also helps the blue sky and water “pop”.
  • I like how you used yellows and light greens for the highlights. A common issue is the overuse of titanium white.
  • Your brushwork helps reiterate the nature of the objects.

What could be improved for next time:

  • Careful with overusing black for shadows. Consider other colors as well.
  • The bushes and plants look a bit messy. A few confident strokes plus feature details would work well here. Look at Sir Arthur Streeton’s work and how he paints plants and flowers.
  • The water seems a touch lighter than the sky. I think you might find it is the other way around.
